About 100 members of the Sudanese community and supporters rallied at Parliament House, on November 8, to call for an end to the genocide in Sudan.
The rally was organised by Ibrahim Eldeen and Sudanese community representatives, who called for freedom for Sudan, a boycott of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and for Janjaweed militias be held to account at the International Criminal Court.
Speakers condemned the UAE for backing and funding the Rapid Support Forces that are committing massacres in El-Fasher and denounced the UAE’s ongoing theft of Sudanese resources, including gold.
“The only guilt we have is being Sudanese, and we have resources they want,” said one speaker, who pointed out the complicity of other governments — the United States and Britain — which are turning a blind eye to the atrocities.
Anne McMenamin, from the Socialist Alliance, spoke about the plight of Sudanese refugees and called on the Australian government and international community to do more.
Two young speakers from the Sudanese community called for a global solidarity movement for Sudan. “Just like we say ‘Free Palestine’, it’s time to start saying ‘free Sudan’.”
