Human Rights Day this year should be a celebration of the end of the Coalition's cruel anti-refugee policies. Yet more than 6 months into the Albanese Labor government and the fight continues for an end to the racist policies, and for permanent visas in Australia for all those denied protection for ten years.
Labor cannot delay any longer. Refugees who were tortured on Nauru and PNG and in onshore detention centres must not be threatened with indefinite insecurity and deportations. The thousands of people denied protection under the cruel fast track system and stuck on bridging visas that expire every 6 months, with no study rights or welfare rights, and barriers to work, travel and family reunion must all have security and permanency now.
The election promise to grant permanent protection to those on TPVs and SHEVs must be immediately fulfilled. The 13,000 refugees stuck in Indonesia since 2014 when the Coalition introduced a ban on resettling UNHCR recognised refugees in Indonesia need that ban lifted now.
All welcome.
