The alternative folk scene has found a new venue in Sydney: the Resistance Centre's Cultural Dissent evenings. Featuring acts like the south coast women's acoustic band the Strummettes, the Anglo-Celtic folk band Taliesin and left-wing songwriter Peter Hicks, the Sunday night spots have so far been relaxing, down-to-earth and high quality. It's a cosy atmosphere — perfect for winter nights — where the music is sometimes in the foreground, and sometimes a pleasant background to the talking. Chris Kempster, Judy Pinder and Len Neary will play on June 23, and Alistair Hulett (pictured) and Peter Hicks will be there on July 28; both sessions get under way at 6 p.m.
