HOBART — On March 16, 3000 people attended a rally organised by the Wilderness Society to protest against forestry practices in Tasmania. The theme of the rally was "Our state, not Gunns!", referring to the Gunns corporation's political influence and forest practices.

Geoff Law, Wilderness Society campaign co-coordinator, said that the big turn-out for the rally should send a strong message to the state government elected on March 18. Speakers at the rally included gardening personality Peter Cundall, anti-war "whistle blower" Andrew Wilkie and writer Richard Flanagan.
