Youth forum unites candidates

By Will Williams and Amanda Lawrence

CANBERRA — On February 13, Resistance organised a discussion between young people and youth candidates standing in the February 21 ACT elections. The Democratic Socialists' Nick Soudakoff, the Greens' Shane Rattenbury, the Australian Democrats' Jason Wood and independent candidate John Hancock attended. The Progressive Labor Party gave apologies.

Following the discussion, a joint media statement on youth unemployment (which is 43.3% in Canberra) was drafted and a media conference was called for February 17 outside Centrelink in Civic.

Resistance activist Justine Kamprad told Green Left: "The discussion at the meeting was a step towards a broader campaign around the issue of youth unemployment, both before and after the election."
