A week of action in Kakadu

JABILUKA — Traditional owners of the Jabiluka mineral lease, the Mirrar, are inviting people to the World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park between September 26 and October 3 to form a strong, united presence to protect their country against the proposed Jabiluka uranium mine.

For more than two decades, the Mirrar have fought against the expansion of the nuclear industry in their country. They have said no to uranium mining insistently, resolutely, and repeatedly. At the week-long Strong Country Celebration, hundreds of other Australians will be saying no alongside them.

Strong Country Celebration will reflect public outrage at the lack of commitment by the federal government to protect our World Heritage. In the October 3 election, the proposed Jabiluka uranium mine will be a major issue.

On October 4-10, the World Heritage Bureau will visit Australia to assess the impact of uranium mining on Kakadu. Kakadu is one of less than 20 World Heritage sites listed for both its natural and cultural values. The bureau will determine whether the cultural and environmental integrity of Australia's largest national park is in danger.

Buses will departing from capital cities on September 23. Bookings and payments must be made by September 17. Phone 1300 360 565 for details. For campaign information, phone the Jabiluka blockade on (08) 8979 3130 or (08) 89793172.
