Washington denies climate change

On June 19, the Observer published leaked extracts from the US submission to the G8 action plan on climate change. They revealed that Washington intended to force the removal of any reference to the fact that climate change is a 'serious threat to human health and ecosystems'; any suggestion that global warming has started; and any suggestion that human behaviour was responsible for climate change. This is at ods with the US National Academy of Science, which, along with the other peak science bodies of G8 nations, issued a statement in early June saying that evidence of climate change was strong enough to compel the G8 to take action. The papers also revealed that the US had withdrawn its pledge to help fund regional climate change monitoring centres throughout Africa.
