Victory for victimised guest workers

November 17, 1993
Issue

A victory BBQ was held in Canberra on February 24 for three Filipino guest workers who spoke out against racist harassment and wage discrimination by their employers in the hospitality industry. The Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union organised a public campaign for the workers, including launching legal action for underpayment of wages, lodging complaints under the ACT Human Rights Act and threats to have the rogue employers "named and shamed" in federal parliament. While the outstanding issues including severe underpayment of wages are still to be formally resolved, all three workers look set to commence new jobs.
