US unions call for amnesty for immigrants

The executive council of the United States' main labour confederation, the AFL-CIO, has called for an amnesty for an estimated 6 million workers who have entered the country illegally.

In addition to an amnesty, the February 16 proposal would end a program which punishes the employers of undocumented workers and extend full workplace rights to prevent intimidation and exploitation of undocumented workers.

The proposal is a reversal of previous AFL-CIO policy.
