URUGUAY: Diplomatic relations with Cuba resumed

Issue

On March 1, Uruguay formally resumed diplomatic relations with Cuba, which had been broken in 2002 by right-wing president Jorge Batlle. Cuban foreign minister Felipe Perez Roque, in Uruguay for the inauguration of new President Tabare Vasquez, proudly reopened the Cuban embassy in Montevideo, saying that the re-establishment of relations was "a new opportunity to accomplish the work of the liberators towards real Latin American integration". Roque and his Uruguayan counterpart Reinaldo Gargano announced their intention to sign trade agreements shortly.
