UNITED STATES: Ballot initiative on Iraq deployment

September 14, 2005
Issue

In Boston on September 7, Massachusetts attorney-general Tom Reilly certified a ballot initiative to require the governor to withhold further National Guard deployment to Iraq and to use his office to recall all Massachusetts National Guard troops currently in Iraq. The ballot, which is binding, is to be held in November 2006 and requires the collection of close to 70,000 signatures from registered voters. Among the organisations supporting the initiative is Military Families Speak Out, a national organisation of people with relatives in the military, which has been campaigning against the US-led war in Iraq.
