Taking on the system

A few weeks ago, the NSW ALP organised a $1000-a-head fundraiser at one of Sydney's most exclusive seafood restaurants — hardly a function for the "battler". And who won the 12 bottles of Grange Hermitage (worth around $3000) raffled on the night? Someone from the staff of former NSW Liberal premier, John Fahey!

While those at the dinner were consuming fine wines and chatting about their latest stock market deals, they were unlikely to have been thinking about the more than 2 million people in Australia living below the poverty line. More than 10% of Australians do not have enough income to meet the basic needs of housing, education, health and food.

The elimination of poverty will require huge changes in society — changes which big business and its politicians fundamentally oppose.

Green Left Weekly takes on these upholders of injustice by championing the causes of all people fighting against injustice in this profits-before-people system. The pages of Green Left Weekly are filled with information about campaigns against sexism and racism, and for workers' rights and environmental protection.

To support these and other struggles, Green Left Weekly relies on the assistance of our readers. Donations to the fighting fund are essential if we are to cover production and distribution costs.

By donating to the fund, you're taking a stand beside all those who know that to eradicate inequality and injustice we have to take on all those who bar the way.
