Sydney rally marks UN ceasefire day

Issue

SYDNEY — One hundred and twenty people attended a rally at against Australia's participation in the US-led wars on Iraq and Afghanistan on September 21 — the UN's Global Ceasefire and Non-violence Day. Held outside the Sydney Town Hall and organised by the Sydney Stop the War Coalition, the rally featured a performance by Tim Freedman from The Whitlams, and was addressed by Donna Mulhearn, a "human shield" during the March 2003 invasion of Iraq; Marlene Obeid, a member of the Canterbury Bankstown Peace Group; and speakers from the Greens, Friends of the Earth, the Australia Venezuela Solidarity Network and the Socialist Alliance. Rallies were held around the country.
