SWAZILAND: 1000 demand reform

April 6, 2005
Issue

More than 1000 members of the Young Communist League and the Swaziland Solidarity Movement protested outside the Swaziland embassy in Pretoria on March 30, calling for democratic reform of the monarchy and condemning the current constitutional reform as a sham because it will leave all executive, judicial and legislative power in the extremely poor country in the hands of the king (who recently purchased a new luxury fleet). They were also demanding the unbanning of all political parties and an end to arbitrary arrests and torture of political and trade union leaders.
