Solidarity

Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor (ASIET) has issued an emergency petition calling on the Suharto government to release all political prisoners and end suppression of freedom of assembly and organisation. More than 100 organisations and activists from around the world have signed the petition, and more support is coming in every day.

The petition campaign will end on October 28, when the petitions will be handed over to consulates and embassies on an International Day of Protest for Human Rights and Democracy in Indonesia. Support for this day has already come in from groups in the US, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, UK, South Africa, India, Nepal and the Philippines. If you are interested in circulating the petition, in taking part in a 24-hour hunger strike in October 28 or in helping in any other way, contact your local ASIET group.

The PRD and other activists need financial help also. Many people have had to leave their jobs and families to organise underground. ASIET will make sure that funds get to the activists where they are needed and that the international defence campaign functions properly. Help save the lives of these young people who have so panicked the dictatorship by their courage, militancy and organisation. Send cheque or money order to ASIET National Secretariat, PO Box 458, Broadway NSW 2007.
