Socialist Alliance condemns Australian intervention in the Solomons

Issue

The Socialist Alliance has condemned the Australian government's decision to send warships and troops to police the Solomon Islands. Alliance members at the June 28 Victorian SA conference argued that Canberra would use the intervention to further its imperialist exploitation of Pacific nations.

The conference endorsed an SA national statement, demanding that Australian forces not be sent, and that the Australian government respect the Solomons' right to self-determination. The alliance called for a protest against the Australian military intervention at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Lonsdale Street, Melbourne at noon on July 9.
