Socialist Alliance approaches Victorian registration

BY GRAHAM MATTHEWS

MELBOURNE — On September 13, the Victorian Electoral Commission sent letters to all 764 Socialist Alliance members in Victoria.

The letters ask one simple question — "Are you an Australian citizen 18 years or over and are you a member of a political party called Socialist Alliance?"

Members must tick the "yes" box, sign, date and return the letter. The VEC requires at least 500 positive responses by October 4, in order to proceed with the registration process.

"Socialist Alliance activists will be ringing every member over the next week to make sure the letters have been returned", Jackie Lynch, Socialist Alliance candidate for Northcote told Green Left. Lynch pointed out that all those who receive forms need to return them in order to ensure the requisite number is made. "We are determined to have 'socialist' on Victorian ballots for the next state election", she said.
