SHOCKFACTS: US spending on Iraq war

Issue 

  • By September 30, the US had spent US$102 billion on the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

  • The costs of the US war on Iraq have averaged $4.8 billion a month.

  • The Pentagon spent $3.1 billion in September. This was the smallest monthly amount since the $2.7 billion spent in November 2003.

  • Congress has already allocated $25 billion for US interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2005. Bush administration officials in February may seek as much as $70 billion in additional Iraq funding.

  • Between the October 2001 invasion and the end of October 2003, the US spent $39.8 billion in Afghanistan.
