Same crap, but more of it

The announcement was made on February 10: Premier Magazines is the result of a $100-million joint publishing venture by Australian Consolidated Press (ACP) and Time Inc. and will change our newsstands forever.

Or will it?

The launch of Premier Magazines, which has caused such a fuss in the publishing game, is simply aimed at making illustrious publications such as Who Weekly, Time and Australian Gourmet Traveller more economical to produce for the Australian market. It also means several new magazines on Australian newsstands.

But who will benefit from this "exciting" development (besides the media executives that is)? Will the new magazines mean more or better quality information reaches this part of the world? It seems unlikely. Will Australian readers have more choice? We think not.

We can answer such questions with confidence because, like many others, we understand that the establishment media doesn't aim first and foremost to inform the people about the world (after all, they might want to change it!). Rather, they fill our minds with sensationalist, inaccurate information, biased for the benefit of those who are in economic and social control.

Green Left Weekly has a different agenda. We strive to keep our readership up to date with what is really going on, so that society can be changed for the better.

We believe that accurate information is a powerful tool in the hands of those with everything to gain from a green and left reorganisation of this society. You can help Green Left Weekly meet its aims by subscribing to the paper (and ensuring you keep well-informed) and making a contribution to the 1998 Fighting Fund. Green Left Weekly — it's your paper.
