GEELONG — Following the demise of Wainwright's Tree in September 1999, this city has desperately needed a progressive bookshop and activist centre. The Democratic Socialist Party, Resistance and Green Left Weekly have announced that such a centre will soon open in the heart of the city, in Little Malop Street.

The Resistance Centre will be run by a small, committed band of activists, who have agreed to donate their time, energy and money to keep it open.

Tim Gooden, DSP Geelong branch secretary told Green Left Weekly: "Every time we sell GLW people ask us where they can get the paper in Geelong if they miss us on the street. Now we can direct them to the Resistance Centre where they can also buy progressive books or attend a meeting on anything from M1, the environment or the history of socialism. It's great that we now have somewhere for organising."

The Resistance Centre will launched on Friday evening, February 23, at 87A, Little Malop Street, above Skateboard World (entrance off McLarty Place). The phone number is (03) 5222 6900.

The centre needs a range of equipment so that its can function properly. Green Left Weekly readers are encouraged to donate office chairs, a microwave oven, a small cooker, fridges or stationery. Phone Tim at the Resistance Centre or email <geelong@greenleft.org.au> if you can help.
