Release Mordechai Vanunu!

By Linda Kaucher

The Australian Campaign to Free Vanunu, part of an international campaign for the freedom of Israeli anti-nuclear whistle-blower Mordechai Vanunu, has proposed an international monthly faxing campaign calling on the Israeli government to release Vanunu and is lobbying the Australian government for a statement supporting this call.

Vanunu has now spent almost 11 years in solitary imprisonment. Amnesty describes his treatment since being kidnapped and tried in secret as cruel, inhuman and degrading.

Next month, Sam Day, peace activist, journalist and coordinator of the US campaign, will visit Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and New Zealand. Day has served jail terms for distributing peace literature at Offutt US air force base, headquarters of the US Strategic Command, which controls targeting and launching of long range nuclear weapons, and for entering a nuclear missile launch site and a military base to protest against the Gulf War.

He has also been involved in legal challenges to the secrecy of the US nuclear weapons program and was the first journalist to document South Africa's secret nuclear weapons program in the early 1980s.

For information about Day's meetings in Australia, contact Tom Henderson Brooks, telephone (02) 9360 6412 or fax 9360 1759.
