Rally for August 19

By Tim E. Stewart

DARWIN — At its July 29 meeting, the NT Trades and Labour Council announced that on August 19, as part of the ACTU's national day of action, a lunchtime rally will be held at Civic Centre Park. Union members and the community are encouraged to attend.

Speakers at the rally will be CPSU branch secretary Janet Crews, AEU branch secretary Mark Crossins, Pat Anderson from Danila Dilba Aboriginal health centre, and a guest speaker from the AMWU on the proposed changes to industrial relations laws.

Buses are being organised from suburban Casuarina to enable staff from the NT University, Royal Darwin Hospital, Telstra, DEETYA, ATSIC and Australia Post to attend. While no unions have called strike action for the day, the TLC passed a motion in defence of union members or activists facing victimisation or intimidation from management for involvement in the preparations or for attending the August 19 rally.
