Democracy and Nation — The White Australia Policy — The period 1890 to 1940, marked the high-point of racial determinism in the West. The response in Australia was the formulation of the racist White Australia Policy. Prominent union, Labour Party and conservative leaders alike gave it full backing. ABC Radio National, Wednesday, July 27, 5.10am.

International Playhouse — Polaris — By Fay Weldon. A remote loch in the Scottish highlands is home for Britain's Polaris nuclear submarines. Just before Christmas, one of them is about to set out on a routine three-month tour of duty. Tim, the navigator, must leave his newly-wed wife, Meg. Meg has no company but their dog — until she's introduced to Tony, the "spare man" from the second crew. Produced for the BBC by Shaun McCulloch. ABC Radio National, Thursday, July 28, 2.05pm.

That's History — Art Historian Juliet Peers talks about the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptures, which is the focus of her new book, More Than Just Gum Trees. The society is Australia's oldest professional women's art organisation and its history is very much the history of Australian art. ABC Radio National, Friday, July 29, 7.10pm.

The Goons — The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler — Young Ned Seagoon is called in by the terrorised gentlefolk of Bexhill-on-Sea to help them track down the dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler. Striking when least expected, the "hurler" caused so much havoc during the blackout of 1941 that troops, massed against the German invasion, were ordered to join the hunt. A trail of cold batter puddings eventually leads Neddie to North Africa where, with the aid of Major Bloodnok, he finally corners the traitor. ABC Radio National, Saturday, July 30, 12pm.
