Radio National celebrates PNG's 20 years of Papua New Guinea's independence — Throughout the weekend of September 16 and 17, ABC Radio National will be devoting considerable air time to programs emphasising the history, culture and politics of our nearest nation and former colony, PNG. Highlights include: Indian Pacific — Presenter Di Martin asks what PNG has to celebrate after 20 years of independence. She speaks to grassroots activists, politicians, and others about the country's state and future. Saturday, 8.05am. The Music Show — Looks at the musics of PNG and its region. Saturday, 10.05am. It's in the Blood — PNG has defied the international pop juggernaut to the extent that 95% of its music is locally recorded. Contemporary music is fused with traditional to create fascinating music that few Australians are even aware exists. Saturday, 3.30pm. Women Out Loud — A special report on the position of women and the women's movement in PNG. Saturday, 5.05pm. Awaye! — West Papuans tell of their struggle against the Indonesian occupation of the western part of the island of New Guinea. Saturday, 6.05pm. Music Deli — Traditional music from PNG. Saturday, 7.10pm. Swag of Yarns — A special program of stories of life in PNG in earlier days. Saturday, 9.05pm. That's History — Recalls Australia's role in the administration of PNG from the turn of the century until independence. Sunday, 2pm. PNG on Film — A look at how PNG has been portrayed by Australian film makers down the years. Sunday, 8.30pm.
Sunday Concert: Eric Bogle — One of Australia's most popular and socially conscious singer-songwriters — he penned the moving antiwar song "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" — recorded live at the 1995 Festival of Perth. ABC Radio National, Sunday, September 17, 4.05pm.
The Words to Say it: Shirley Shackleton — The death of Shackleton's husband in 1975 at the hands of the Indonesian invaders of East Timor turned her into an ardent crusader for the East Timorese. Here she speaks about her life before and after her husband's death. ABC Radio National, Sunday, September 17, 6.30pm.
Imagining the Forest — Sound pictures from the disappearing Australian native forests. The project began with the attempt to record the sound of the lyrebird mimicking the sound of axes decimating its environment. Recorded by Andrew McLennan. ABC Classic FM, Monday, September 18, 9pm.
