BRISBANE — Queensland's 16,000 public hospital nurses on October 25 won a 3.8% interim pay rise and the first round in their Australian Industrial Relations Commission battle with the state government.

The increase will come into effect from the first pay period following the commission decision and carry through to April 2003, or until a decision from the final hearing of the Queensland Nurses Union's 18% wage claim.

The QNU has asked for a 10% pay increase plus a 4-7.5% qualification allowance in their interim claim. The commission ruled against the allowance. However, the union claimed victory over Queensland Health, which opposed the payment of an interim award.
