Protesters target Howard's election launch

Issue

Marce Cameron, Brisbane

On September 26, PM John Howard will be in Brisbane to officially launch the Coalition's election campaign. A broad alliance of community organisations, activist groups and progressive political parties has called for a rally and march on the themes "End the lies, Howard out", and "Rally for truth".

Rumour has it that Howard will speak at Brisbane Town Hall. Protest organisers are urging all those who oppose Howard to gather at 11am at the nearby Roma Street Forum for a diverse, colourful and peaceful community rally and march.

Well-known local band Steve Towson and the Conscripts will play on the day and donations are being sought for a skywriter to write "Not happy Johnny" high above the venue of Howard's election launch.

The march has been endorsed by Griffith University professor Ian Lowe, A Just Australia, ALP Senator Claire Moore, National Union of Students president Jodie Jansen, the Wilderness Society, Friends of the Earth, Murri community activist Sam Watson, Rally for Peace, the Iraq Solidarity Committee, the Qld Anti-Bases Group, the Qld Greens, the Socialist Alliance, the Australian Democrats, the Refugee Action Collective, Socialist Alternative, Resistance, University of Queensland student union president Margot Balch and the Committees in Solidarity with Latin America and the Caribbean.
