MELBOURNE — Solidarity activists protested outside the El Salvador consulate here on July 14, where members of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) explained the atrocities being committed by El Salvador's government, which is backed by the United States administration. They said death squads are being used to carry out "social cleansing", and described the recent violent murder of an elderly family and an attack on a student demonstration for democracy in which two student leaders were killed.

The FMLN handed a statement of condemnation to consulate staff and pledged to continue to struggle for democracy in El Salvador.
