PNG: Rally for West Papuan self-determination

November 17, 1993
Issue

On October 27, some 1000 people rallied in Port Moresby to highlight the struggle for West Papua's independence. West Papua was annexed by Indonesia in 1969 after a sham "act of free choice" and both the PNG and Australian governments support Indonesian rule over the territory. Lawyer Powes Parkop told Radio Australia on October 26 that the rally aimed to show "the governments of Papua New Guinea and Australia that their push and position of their governments is not really supported by the people of the Pacific".
