Perth Hiroshima Day

By Anne Pavy

Perth — The proposed French nuclear tests have multiplied interest in plans for the Hiroshima Day demonstration here. The theme for the rally and march on August 6 at Russell Square will be "Nuclear Tests No More! Hiroshima Never Again!"

Speakers will be focusing on the impact of nuclear weapons and testing on civilian populations. An independence activist from Tahiti may address the rally via a telephone hook-up.

A large organising committee has formed with a diverse range of groups including the Trades and Labor Council, Greens (WA), Resistance, People for Nuclear Disarmament and representatives from both the Labor and Liberal parties.

Postcards against nuclear testing will be available on the day to send to political parties, student and community groups in France and to the mayor of Hiroshima.

TAFE students are starting a "shadows project"; they will paint shadows, representing the outlines of people left behind in Hiroshima after the bomb was dropped, along the route of the march.
