Online politics increasingly popular

Issue

Green Left Weekly is the most popular Australian political website, and has been on top for each of the last four quarterly surveys, according to a Hitwise report in the August 10 Australian Financial Review.

The chief marketing officer at web research company Hitwise, Tessa Court, said Australians were spending more time at Australian sites. She said that "one of the biggest areas of growth was the political website category, heavily influenced by issues such as the war in Iraq and the looming elections in Australia and the US".

According to Court, traffic to political sites rose 52% over the year and "'anti-establishment' sites tended to draw big audiences. The controversial site www.johnhowardlies.com for instance, became the most popular Australian political site on July 7."
