NT Socialist Alliance gears up for 2003

BY CHRIS ATKINSON

DARWIN — The Socialist Alliance here are gearing up for a big year in 2003. That was the conclusion after a discussion by members and supporters over a dinner on November 23.

Seven of the 14 people attending were members of the Democratic Socialist Party, the alliance's only affiliate organisation in Darwin. Others attending came from a variety of campaign backgrounds including the trade unions, the No War Committee, the Refugee Action Network and Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor.

Participants decided that the Socialist Alliance should have a lively contingent in the rally and march against the war on December 1. They also felt that the alliance must do all it can to stop the federal government from deporting more than 80 East Timorese refugees, which may take place in late December.

The activists discussed getting involved in struggles in support of Indigenous people's rights and also environmental campaigns.
