NSW Libs worried about Work Choices

The NSW Coalition parties must be worried that widespread anger against the federal government's Work Choices legislation could affect their election prospects at the state election in March 2007. On March 9, they shocked the corporations and their federal colleagues by voting to support the NSW Labor government's legislation to protect NSW public servants from the federal government's new laws.

The state legislation shifts around 186,000 NSW public sector employees, including nurses and teachers, from statutory corporations to the crown. This makes the NSW Industrial Relations Commission the final arbiter of pay and conditions disputes for public servants.
