By Bill Mason BRISBANE — "Close US bases! Stop nuclear testing!" were the main slogans for a protest rally held in the City Square here on December 1, as part of national actions to present the US government with a "people's eviction notice" for its war bases in Australia. Speakers linked the bases with the French nuclear testing in the Pacific, and proposed US bomb tests set for next year. The Anti-Nuclear Alliance, which sponsored the protest, plans to organise further actions in the new year against the continuing nuclear menace. This action follows an earlier demonstration in the square on November 22 against the fourth French nuclear detonation at Moruroa Atoll. State labor MP Dean Wells, Sam Watson from the Aboriginal community, Brian O'Halloran from the Catholic Commission for Peace and Justice and NZ peace activist Moana Cole were among the speakers at this action. The Anti-Nuclear Alliance can be contacted on 3254 0565 or 3229 8832.
