Murdoch guild threatened

PERTH — The Murdoch University administration is attempting to force the student guild to retract the latest issue of its newspaper Metior. It is threatening to cancel the leases for all the amenities run by the guild, in particular the social club and Sir Walter's coffee shop. The guild relies on these services for its funding. The furore erupted after a general meeting of the guild voted to reprint an article — "The Art of Shoplifting" — originally written as a commentary on the unequal distribution of wealth and published in La Trobe University's newspaper Rabelais. The reprint was designed to express solidarity with students at La Trobe who have come under attack from the federal ALP government and the La Trobe administration.
A general meeting of the guild is planned for September 14 to decide whether Metior will be distributed or retracted.
