Labor right wins University of Canberra

CANBERRA — After losing the student elections at the Australian National University a few weeks ago, Labor right won the positions of president, women's officer and environment officer, and became the largest voting block on the general committee at the University of Canberra last week.
Independent Renee Brooks lost her bid to re-win the president's position by only 11 votes but secured the education vice-president position with the support of Labor right. The four National Union of Students' delegate positions have been split between Labor and independents.
The election of the Labor ticket signifies the re-emergence of the student Labor club after a number of years absence from UC. Activists in the campaign to stop government attacks on education hope that Labor on UC will support the campaign much more than they did in the Student Association on ANU this year.
Resistance, which will be establishing a club at UC next year, has pledged to pressure the Labor students to honour their election promises to build the campaign against education cuts.
