'Labor has lost its way'

PERTH — Kath Mallott, a former member of the ALP state executive, is an independent candidate for the seat of Perth in the West Australian state elections. Calling on voters to "put Perth before a party", she says Labor has "lost its way".

A former worker for the Clothing, Textile and Footwear Union, Mallott says the main problem is "power-brokers who control the two major parties. No matter what political party you look at, the power bases destroy the ideology."

She hopes to promote a political system in which "everybody takes responsibility for their own lives and the social structure within which they live. I don't know how many times people have to be shocked before they start taking on this responsibility", she says.
