SYDNEY — Greg Friend (King O'Malley) and Brett Ahern (Billy Hughes) argue about conscription in The Legend of King O'Malley at the New Theatre in Newtown. Written by Michael Boddy and Bob Ellis, directed by Matthew Samuel, The Legend is a fast-moving, energetic musical that brings to life the colourful adventures of US-born King O'Malley: preacher, insurance salesperson, shipwreck survivor befriended by Queensland Aborigines and Tasmanian elected federal politician, said to have founded Canberra and the Commonwealth Bank, as well as opening the transcontinental railway. If that leaves you breathless, so will The Legend, which is well-performed entertainment and highly recommended.
