IWD kickstarted in north coast

LISMORE — Plans are underway here to organise International Women's Day, the region's first for two years. Women from different parts of the region having been meeting to prepare a march and rally, multicultural fair day, art exhibition and performance night.

Many feminists from NSW's north coast were disappointed that no IWD march occurred last year, the day only being marked by a campus speakout and an apolitical event during work hours organised by the local council.

After a very succesful Reclaim the Night mobilisation last October, the Democratic Socialist Party initiated a new IWD collective. Student activists, workers from women's services, radical feminists and socialist feminists from the DSP and Resistance have come together to ensure IWD 2001 makes a strong stand for women's liberation.

The theme for the day is "Women for global justice: women together can change the village, town and world!".

The march will be held on March 8 (see the calendar for details) to allow people from the area to attend the Brisbane rally on March 10. To help out with the events or find out more information contact Kath on 6622 0103 or email <iwdlismore@hotmail.com>.
