Italian initiative for Australian stolen generations

The municipality of Florence on April 6 approved a motion concerning Australian Aborigines who were forcibly separated from their families in past decades. The motion, proposed by the Italian branch of the German-based Society for Threatened Peoples, calls on the Australian government to pay compensation to affected families.

This marks the beginning of a European campaign which will try to involve the Italian Senate and Chamber of Representatives, as well as the European Parliament.

The proposal was conceived by Alessandro Michelucci, head of the Italian branch of the Society for Threatened Peoples, and supported by Vincenzo Bugliani, Green MP in the municipality of Florence.

The Society for Threatened Peoples can be contacted at PO Box 6282, I-50127 Florence, Italy.
