Greenhouse rally planned in Adelaide

ADELAIDE — A rally, march and bike ride are planned for the November 30 greenhouse national day of action.

The bike ride is planned for 10:30 am, starting and finishing at Victoria Square. At 11:30am a rally will be held at Victoria Square, followed by a march that will stop at the office of the Liberal minister for the environment, Senator Hill, and then move on to Rymill Park.

A committee has been formed to organise the day, and anyone interested is encouraged to get involved. The first meeting was attended by representatives from the Australian Conservation Foundation, Resistance, the Australian Greens, Friends of the Earth and various bicycle groups.

Paul Petit, who represented the Australian Greens at the meeting, told Green Left Weekly, "There is such widespread community disgust with the federal government's position that it's important to take every opportunity we can to involve people both in organising and participating in activities around this issue.

"The Australian Greens will be linking the Australian People's Declaration with this NDA and putting all our energy into building this day."

Kelly Barrett, who attended the meeting from Resistance, agreed that it was essential that the action focus on involving the largest number of people.

"That is why the committee has decided to organise a rally and march in addition to the bike ride", she explained. "This day needs to put demands directly onto the Howard government to agree to a binding 20% cut to 1990 levels of greenhouse emissions by 2005."

Resistance will be holding a speak-out and banner painting in Rundle Mall on Friday, November 21, from 4:30pm, to build the November 30 NDA.
