GLW sets fundraising target

2002 will mark an important milestone for the Green Left Weekly — the 500th issue comes off the presses mid-year. With the contraction of media ownership in Australia during that decade, GLW is an important voice of dissent among the mind-numbing "news" of the corporate media empires.

GLW has been able to survive for so long because of our readers' appreciation of the unique news and analysis it provides in each issue. But this is only part of the story.

The success of the paper is also due to the commitment of thousands of volunteers, supporters and subscribers that have helped in so many different ways during the last decade. GLW would not be the paper it is today without this generous support.

Paying the bills to keep GLW in print is one of our biggest challenges. At the January Democratic Socialist Party and Resistance educational conference, members of the two organisations pledged to give a total of $86,042 to GLW, kicking off the 2002 Green Left Weekly Fighting Fund.

We need, however, to raise more than $200,000 for the fund. With your help, we can do it. In the coming months there will be many GLW fundraisers to support — film nights, dinners, band nights and much, much more. In Perth and Sydney for example, journalist John Pilger will be speaking at events organised and sponsored by GLW.

To donate, or find out about events you can support, contact your local Resistance centre as listed on page 2.
