Geelong launches new Resistance Centre

GEELONG — In a corner of a building that once housed the Australian Federal Police, a new group of decidedly more radical tenants committed themselves to vastly different aims when they opened Geelong's new Resistance Centre on February 23.

The launch attracted a broad range of Geelong's radical activists, from trade union organisers, environmental activists and members of the Greens through to independent lefties and a local progressive church minister.

The party's Geelong branch secretary Tim Gooden opened the office, expressing the hope that the Centre would become a resource for all of those struggling against global capitalism. "We want to build a unity of all progressive people in Geelong and draw in new activists. I'm not saying that the revolution will begin in Geelong but the DSP will make sure Geelong is part of it."

Speakers from the Greens and the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union gave solidarity greetings and echoed Gooden's words about building unity. All speakers noted that since S11 there does appear to be a greater sense of fight-back in the community.

Graham Matthews, the party's Melbourne district secretary, told the gathering, "Driving down here I noticed that we were on the M1 freeway, the same name as the mobilisation we are building outside the stock exchange. This should be a constant reminder of the need to pull together all forces fighting against global exploitation. Regional centres like Geelong can play a huge role in this process."

The new centre is located at 87A Little Mallop Street, Geelong; the phone number is 5222 6900.
