Freedom Ride heads off

Issue

SYDNEY — On February 12, exactly 40 years after the legendary 1965 Freedom Ride, 200 supporters farewelled the Freedom Ride 2005 bus as it departed from Sydney University to follow the original route. After a welcome to Gadigal Land of the Eora Nation by Aunty Ali Golding, the crowd heard from Freedom Ride coordinator Samia Hossain, NSW education minister Andrew Refshauge and Professor Ann Curthoys. According to Curthoys, who participated in the original ride, Freedom Ride 2005 has greater participation of Indigenous students and women than the 1965 ride.
