EGYPT: Huge government-sponsored anti-war protest

Issue

More than 1 million people marched through Cairo on March 1 in a anti-war protest sponsored by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's ruling National Democratic Party. Members of the party, including the minister of information, marched with the protesters.

Walid Kazziha, a political science professor at American University in Cairo, told the press that the pro-US government had been forced to support the protest by the overwhelming popular opposition to a US war against Iraq. Kazziha noted that members of the Egyptian government have not actively participated in public protests for 25 years.
