Conference marks centenary of Qld women's suffrage

Issue

BRISBANE — On April 9-10, the University of Queensland hosted a conference to commemorate the 100the anniversary of women's suffrage in Queensland, achieved on January 25, 1905.

The conference — attended by 40 women and men — was organised by the Centre for Research on Women, Gender, Culture and Social Change at UQ, in particular the director of the unit, Professor Carole Ferrier.

Speakers punctured the myth that women didn't have to struggle to win the vote, detailing the 15-year campaign that had to be waged in Queensland for women's suffrage to be granted.
