A huge rally in the centre of the city demanded justice for Afghan asylum seekers on August 22.

Specifically, it demanded bringing in at least 20,000 refugees from Afghanistan and granting permanent protection to thousands of Afghan refugees who are on temporary visas.

The rally was lively and vibrant and featured young women speakers.

Aboriginal activist Sam Watson Jr welcomed people and highlighted the similarities between the colonial mistreatment of First Nations peoples and the imperialist invasion of Afghanistan. They also highlighted the importance of justice for refugees.

Similar mobilisations took place in Perth, Hobart and Adelaide.
