Celebrities demand release of Cuban Five

Issue

A letter to US attorney-general Alberto Gonzalez demanding the release of five Cuban anti-terrorist operatives unfairly convicted by the US has attracted more than 3000 high-profile signatories from around the world. These include French actor Gerard Depardieu, US actors Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte, writers Alice Walker and Russell Banks, historian Howard Zinn, former US attorney-general Ramsey Clark, Brazilian theologian Leonardo Boff, Egyptian economist Samir Amin and former coordinator of the United Nations Program for Development Malian Aminata Traer. Despite an August 9 decision of the US Court of Appeals 11th Circuit in Atlanta, which reversed the convictions of the Cuban Five and declared their Miami trial null, they remain in maximum security prisons.
