The Fabulous Story of Cuban Salsa — Through the expert insight of Dr Alen Rodriguez from the Institute of Cuban Music, learn about the true origins of this vibrant music. The cultural heritage of Cuba — which combines the cultures of African slaves and Spanish colonists — is rich and dynamic. The resulting music is a rich sauce ("salsa"). Modern Cuban music mixes local styles — son, mambo, rumba, cha cha — with influences from jazz, funk, reggae and even rap. The program features archival footage of legendary musicians from the 1940s and 1950s. SBS, Thursday, January 22, 8pm.

Provos: The Provisional IRA and Sinn Féin — A four-part series that traces the rebirth of the Irish Republican Army in 1969 and its activities to the present day. SBS, Friday, January 23, 8pm.

America in the Fifties: The Rage Within — The fabled "good life" delivers peace and plenty to the white US but bypasses blacks. Invisible to mainstream society, other than as entertainers and sports stars, African-Americans began to demand their full rights as citizens and human beings. SBS, Saturday, January 24, 7.30pm.

Exile in Sarajevo — Bosnian-Australian director Tahir Cambis and Sarajevan Alma Sahbaz's passionate and personal account of the siege of Sarajevo, where they spent the last six months of the war filming. Exile in Sarajevo dramatises the tragic attempt to dismember a multiethnic city where Serbs, Bosnians and Croats had lived in harmony. The film is a poetic and powerful testimony to Sarajevo's culture and humanity in the face of chauvinist aggression and western complicity. SBS, Sunday, January 25, 8.30pm.

Karzan's Brothers: Escape from the Safe Haven — A Kurdish family is trapped in the US-enforced United Nations "safe haven" in northern Iraq. This is the story of their escape. SBS, Tuesday, January 27, 8pm.
