BRISBANE — A public inquiry into war crimes by the Papua New Guinea government against the people of Bougainville has been set for Saturday, February 20, at the Axion Room, University of Queensland Union Building, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Its purpose is to expose the largely unreported war in Bougainville and to inquire into human rights abuses on the island. A report will be sent to interested governments and other organisations.

Speakers will include Sam Voron, Radio Free Bougainville; Peter Young of the University of Technology Journalism Department; international law professor Max Lane; and Brian Laver from the Institute of Social Ecology.

Smuggled tapes from Bougainville of Interim Government President Francis Ona and Australian human rights lawyer Rosemary Gillespie will also be played.
