Theatreworks, St Kilda, until March 22

Review by Graham Moyes

"If Ned Kelly was king/ he'd make those robbers swing/ he'd bring them down ..." Thus lamented Midnight Oil circa '81, adding another layer to the enigma that was Ned Kelly: a man who, according to your definition, was a hero, bandit, murderer, freedom fighter, legend or, possibly above all, a social commentator of his time — and perhaps even our times?

Kickhouse Theatre's wonderfully gifted young playwright and accomplished historian, Pam Leversha, has adapted the classic drama penned by Douglas Stewart in 1943, and the result is a very powerful and entertaining production. With impressive, simple sets and flowing direction, this particular reading of the historical icon certainly gallops along. Add to this sparse lighting designed by Efterpi Soropos and confidently operated by Jeni Hector, and you have a recipe for understated success.

Joe Clements in the title role is captivating, vulnerable and believable as the self-chosen leader. With able assistance by a strong cast, 19th century Victoria comes to life before your eyes. The music — composed by Tim Dargaville and performed by Madeline Flynn, Tim Humphrey and Andrew Lindsay — plays a major part in creating the unique atmosphere of this production.

However, at times it did drown out the actors, which can probably be excused on opening night. I found the sample of "Wild Colonial Boy" performed by the cast an absolute delight too.

Kickhouse are on to a winner with this vibrant and uncluttered performance. They have recently suffered incredibly harsh cuts to their funding, but through sheer tenacity have carried on. Kickhouse are also in the enviable position of having wonderful playwrights among their ranks, not to mention an amazingly strong young "stable", of which Pam Leversha is ample proof.

If you feel that theatre isn't quite your thing, this production's for you — it's a breath of fresh air. If Ned Kelly was king, indeed!
